Susi discovers Vikram’s singing talent
A stunning piece of information for you all – Vikram has sung all his songs in Kanthaswamy! For this, we have to thank director Susi Ganesan.
At the Kanthaswamy press meet held on February 6th at music director Devi Sri Prasad’s recording studio, Susi Ganesan made this announcement, giving a pleasant shock to the media. Producer Kalaipuli S. Dhanu, music director Devi Sri Prasad, and lyricist Viveka were also present at the meet.
Susi described to an excited group of media personnel how he discovered Vikram’s singing talent. His vivid and enthusiastic description clearly showed how surprised he must have been when he discovered that Vikram could sing so well! One pleasant evening, after wrapping up the day’s shoot, Vikram was chatting with Susi about his upcoming cultural programme in Malaysia. Speaking about it and his preparations for it, Vikram asked him to listen to a medley recorded by him. While listening to the first song ‘Moongil Kaadugale’ (Samurai), Susi asked Vikram where he got this unplugged version from. Then Vikram revealed that it is not an unplugged version, but he recorded it while practising for the upcoming show!
An excited Susi’s immediate move was to contact music director Devi Sri Prasad and share this discovery with him. Soon, they decided that Vikram should sing a song in Kanthaswamy and cajoled Vikram into crooning for them. In the recording studio, Vikram stunned them with his superb performance; he sang like a pro, improvising and modulating beautifully! On the spot, it was decided that he would sing all his songs in Kanthaswamy!
Devi Sri Prasad said that Vikram is a music director’s delight. He is surprised at the depth of Vikram’s knowledge in music. The music director also announced that he is going to make him sing in Telugu for the Telugu dubbed version of Kanthaswamy!
Both Susi and Devi Sri Prasad agreed that songs sung by Vikram – ‘Pizza Hot’, ‘Mama Mami’ and ‘Poda Podi’ – need a great deal of voice modulation and improvisation, which only experienced playback singers can hope to achieve. They added that the magic of M.K. Thyagarajan’s era – where actors sang for themselves, thus increasing the films appeal – will return with Kanthaswamy.
PS: Vikram revealed that he learnt the basics of music when he was in a boarding school in Yercaud. He also revealed that he can play various musical instruments, including guitar and keyboard!
