Aadhavan vs. Peranmai
Diwali is the festival when the box office is besieged by movies – big and small. However, this year the attack on the box office is less, but that could mean the impact is greater. Only two Tamil movies that made it to theatres this Diwali: Aadhavan and Peranmai.
Aadhavan, produced by Udayanidhi Stalin, is directed by K.S. Ravikumar, and stars Suriya and Nayantara. Knowing K.S. Ravikumar well, it’s safe to say that he has hit upon all the right notes in the movie to make it a commercial success, just like his previous ventures. Suriya has turned out to be the most bankable star in Kollywood these days, so that should also act as good bait for audiences. The third star in the movie is Harris Jayaraj, of course. His songs for the movie, like every composition he has made since Minnale, rocked the charts. As if all these aren’t enough, the movie boasts of glamour from Nayantara and humour from Vadivelu. Awesome stunts, amazing locations and loads of entertainment. Will Aadhvan score over its only contender, Peranmai?
Produced by Ayngaran films, Peranmai is directed by Jananathan, who tugged at our heartstrings with Iyarkai. For actor Jayam Ravi, Peranmai promises an image make-over. Looking every bit an army officer in build and manner, Ravi has proved that he can toughen up for a macho role. There is no heroine, because Peranmai is not for the lovelorn. It’s an out-and-out actin flick, but there are a bunch of young girls on board. But if you got expecting glamour, you are in for a shock – these gals perform some kickass stunts and wield some giant arms, so you will not want to mess with them. An important facet of this movie are the bad boys. The villains are played by a group of Americans with popular Hollywood actor Roland Kickinger being the ringmaster. In Bollywood, it has become quite common to rope in Hollywooders; for Kollywood, this marks the beginning. Lots of action and a sound political message. Will Peranmai beat Aadhavan at the box office?
Only two contenders. For all we know, both movies might do famously. In fact we hope they do!
