A R Rahman: I never spoke against Tamils, Clarification Letter
Music wizard A.R. Rahman has issued a signed statement clarifying his stance vis-à-vis the raging issue of Mullai Periyar Dam which has been threatening to go out of control even as the Centre appears to be making last-minute efforts to bring truce between the States of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Rahman was reacting to the controversy surrounding him wishing good luck to the music director of Dam 999 (which has been banned in Tamil Nadu).
In his statement, Rahman has said that he was only wishing the customary good luck to Ouseppachan, the music director of the controversial film Dam 999 directed by ex-Naval Officer Sohan Roy. “I was speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of the audio-launch of the Hindi film Ek Deewana Tha (Hindi version of Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya). It was at that time a scribe referred to the nomination of songs from Dam 999 for the Oscar awards.
“As a fellow music-director, I expressed my heart-felt congratulations to Ouseppachan to win the coveted Oscar award. I feel pained to note that my good luck message has been taken out of context and is made into a controversy. I have always felt proud to be a Tamil and am fully aware of the contribution Tamils the world over have made in my growth as a music director.
“I shall forever remain thankful and grateful to them for their continued support. As I had been away in the U.S. for the past 3 weeks in connection with composing music for an upcoming Hollywood film, I wasn’t aware of the controversy surrounding the Mullai Periyar Dam issue. However, I endorse the stand taken by our respected former President Abdul Kalam in the issue.
“If the whole world is in awe about the progress our country has been making in various spheres of life, it’s mainly because of the unity which bonds us together as Indians. It’s of utmost importance to preserve this oneness among us. I would love to offer my heartiest Christmas and New Year wishes to all my fans,” concluded Rahman.
